Human Resource Management (CKMBA050303)

 Course Objectives:

The Human Resource Management module aims to expose students to some core HR functions and a business perspective of human capital management. Students will learn about the strategic link of human effectiveness to corporate competitiveness, and the human implications of business changes in the global scene. This course will highlight the importance of a performance-based management system, as well as the human initiatives that add value to customers and enhance an effective execution of organizational strategies. We shall also discuss in good depth how career management system and reward design may affect talent recruitment and retention, as well as a drive for better performance. To summarize, the course objectives include:

  • To learn more about the HR challenges companies face in the process of globalization and rapid contextual changes
  • To introduce how work division and integration can be improved through corporate restructuring
  • To discuss on the recruitment and career management of critical personnel
  • To identify the benefits of knowledge management
  • To understand the importance of effective performance management and the development of proper appraisal standards and procedures
  • To gain awareness of some basic principles on compensation design and diverse incentive schemes.

Instructor Biography:

Professor Audrey Tsui

Dr. Tsui obtained her Ph.D. in Human Resource Development and International Development from Texas A&M University, USA . She was a Professor of Human Capital Management and China Business at IMD, Switzerland from 1999 to 2002, and before that a faculty member of the Graduate Business School of National University of Singapore NUS, where Dr. Tsui was the founding director of its MSc program in Asia Pacific Human Resource Management, and a core teaching staff of its MBA and EMBA Programs. At present, Dr. Tsui is Visiting Professor to a number of top business schools in China teaching their graduate degree and senior executives development programs. She specialises in Corporate Competitiveness; Strategy Human Capital Management, Performance Management; Compensation Design and Talent Management.

Dr. Tsui consulted and directed numerous executive programs for established institutions such as Glaxo-Smithkline, Astra Zeneca, IKEA Asia Pacific, Norsk Hydro Group, Motorola, Lucent Technology, Schneider China, Xian-Janseen, Singapore Airlines, Neptune Orient Lines, Singapore’s National Computer Board, Port Authority and Ministry of Defence, Royal Brunei Airlines, Singer Sri Lanka and the Indofood Group. Being a proficient bilingual, Dr. Tsui was often invited to conduct Mandarin executive programs for and give keynote addresses to different Chinese ministries, city officials, hospital administrators as well as senior executives of Chinese enterprises. Her institutional clients include China Mobile, China Telecom, Petro China, China Aviation Oil Holding, China North Industries Group, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Shanghai Rui Jin Hospital, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, Guotai Junan Securities, Bank of Beijing, Shanghai Diesel Engine, Shanghai Home Value Industry, Hebei International Trust & Investment Corporation, Shandong Shengli Co., Guangdong Midea Group and Guangdong Evergreen Group etc.

At IMD, Professor Tsui has conducted sessions for many core public programs, including its MBA Program, Program for Executive Development (PED), Managing Corporate Resources Program (MCR), HR Leadership in Global Organisation (HRL), Orchestrating Winning Performance (OWP), Mastering Technology Enterprise (MTE), and the Brazilian CEO Program. In 2001, she co-directed for the Deutsche Bank an in-house program on “Understanding Business Challenges in China and Asia”, a key module of the bank’s International Leadership Development Program. In 2002, she was invited to speak on China’s reform to a group of Finnish parliament members.

Dr Tsui establishes in 2003 the Global Competitiveness Management Consultancy Ltd. (Glocompete) with offices in both Hong Kong and Shanghai. The company specialises in Corporate Competitiveness, Strategic Human Capital Management, Enhancing Service Excellence and Wellness Management.
